CHAPTER 6
Being part of the Shadow Council and the loose lips of some of its members had given me information that I would never have gotten otherwise. Hell, I would never have known about the Shrouded Nation if Tani wasnât killed by vampires. That incident had changed the trajectory of my life. There was no going back and part of me was thankful for the purpose Artemis had given me.
I was still struggling to comprehend that I was a descendant of the goddess Artemis and now one of her Hunters. And on a council that oversees supernatural creatures that live amongst humans without their knowledge. Had someone tried to explain the council, and its supernatural species, I would have thought they were drinking coffee laced with LSD.
Setting aside all the mind-bending details dropped on me over the past forty-eight hours, I climbed out of my car to approach the entrance to a dive bar. Ensuring I avoided the pothole in the sidewalk, I eyed the place dubiously.
The building was small, with one tiny window along the front. It was covered in faded signs for various beers. Many of which were no longer manufactured. There was more weathered gray paint visible than the original blue. The smell of stale cigarette smoke, alcohol, and sweat seeped through the closed door.
I grimaced as I pushed through a door that looked like it was one patron from breaking at its hinges. It creaked as I entered, reminding me of a haunted house I had taken Mae to in her teens. The missing letters on the overhead sign made the name read Lac Damd rather than Black Diamond.
The long line of motorcycles in front of the ragged bar made me wonder if bikers were particularly tasty. I considered going to Club Essence, but dismissed it in favor of something less reputable. I doubted Darick or his auburn-haired cohort would visit a popular blood club.
It was clear when I questioned the supernaturals that most would turn in their mothers if she broke the rules. No one wanted to get on the bad side of the council. If the Shrouded Nation were anything like the human world, word would spread fast about Darick being involved in Taniâs murder. I knew they would turn him in if he showed up, and I planned to be there when he did.
Outliers of the Shrouded Nation, and the mundanes, frequented the Black Diamond. I hoped I could gather more information about the auburn-haired vampire. Aside from being more feral than Darick, I knew nothing about him.
With no other leads, Darickâs blood sucking side-kick was my best bet for finding the two of them. After the scene outside council headquarters, Darick wouldnât be stupid enough to return home or any of his usual haunts. The auburn-haired vampire was my best bet for getting revenge for Taniâs murder.
Any guilt I experienced over wanting to kill the vampires was evaporated when I considered the mission Artemis had given me. Creatures like Darick and his friend couldnât remain free to kill innocents.
